US Department of Labor announces results of

"Tools for America’s Job Seekers Challenge"

Voting tallied, public’s favorite online tools posted on site



WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor announced on February 2, 2010 the results of its Tools for America’s Job Seekers Challenge. Recommendations have been tallied, and the top-rated sites in each of 6 categories – general job boards, niche tools, career tools, career exploration tools, web 2.0 and “other” – are now available at www.careeronestop.org/jobseekertools.


“My thanks go out to the businesses and organizations that submitted their tools for evaluation, and to the members of the public who offered their input,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. “We called on the public to let us know what they want out of online job tools, and they have responded in great numbers. In the process, we also created a great resource for job seekers.”


During a two-week period in January, more than 16,000 members of the public registered to vote for tools and leave comments. All participating tools are now posted on this Web site so that job seekers can continue to access job openings and career information.


The job tools postings are the culmination of an eight-week effort to offer members of the public an opportunity to weigh in on their favorite career sites and to provide the sites themselves with a chance to raise awareness about the tools they offer. Government agencies, private companies, nonprofit organizations and many other entities came together to make the project a success. An alphabetical list of all sites will be available on www.careeronestop.org in the coming weeks.

Opportunities Knocking is a community of folks interested in learning how to enhance their careers through informative presentations, in person networking with a new spin, and personalized career coaching.

For example, on January 20, the 30 minute presentation will be "How to Use LinkedIn and Google for Efficient Networking and Job Searching". Then we will have the usual one hour of Spin-net networking which is a little like a combination of speed-dating and Toastmasters. The goal of Spin-net is to have everybody in the room get to know everybody else in the room a person at a time at tables of 8, and at the same time perfect an "elevator speech" for use during a job search. After the two hour formal event concludes, attendees network easily for two hours because they already have "broken the ice" during Spin-net. These events currently take place in San Diego, but videos and powerpoint presentations are available at www.opportunitiesknocking.com, and on LinkedIn.

Opportunities Knocking also means one on one coaching to be arranged at a convenient time and place. Resumes, help with job search, salary negotiations, and mock interviews are a few of the typical coaching subjects. Coaching can be done in person, on the phone, or via videoconferencing using a service such as Skype.

The focus of Opportunities Knocking is on teaching. Teaching you the techniques so that you are confident and capable of conducting many phases of a job search on your own.
