Excellent resource I refer to daily. Some areas I find useful:
1. Exploring careers / informational interviewing: Searching for a job title; e.g. 'Director of Marketing' and narrowing by zip code gives you a great list of local decision-makers that you want to connect with.
2. Company info: using the company tab and searching for a company by name gives you great info: who in the company is currently on linkedin, where people worked prior to employment with that company, where they worked after, does the company have 'new hires' (good gauge of company's resiliency in this economy if they have several recent hires)
3. Introductions: The site shows you who is connected to the person you want to link with - use this to request to be introduced to the decision-maker you need.
4. Groups: Unfortunately, there are many groups that seem to be more self-serving than others. A great group in my local area is 'We Are Orange County (WAOC)'.
5. Recommendations: This is an excellent way for previous managers and colleagues to provide a quick 'letter of reference'.
*** If you spend the time and effort to build your linkedin profile, be sure to put it in your Resume heading and in your email signature ***
Like anything else online, the value of linkedin depends on the amount of strategic effort ant time put in by the job seeker - and, of course, the technical ability as well.

Has anyone here heard of naymz?? It claims to be better than linkedin, but I personally have never heard of it.
Excellent tool - being able to post a slide show presentation of some of my work allowed prospective employers see much more than they could on a resume. This was a great help in my landing an excellent position.
How is linkedin.com a job posting or job search specialty. Linkedin is way more than that, in fact that is their specialty at all. This categories title clearly states sites that specializes in job search/ job postings. They will NOT get my vote.
No, it is not a job search posting like indeed, etc. However, there are some jobs that some members of LinkedIn post only on LinkedIn. Also, the ability to add "applications" - in my case the ability to attach a Power Point synopsis of some of my projects, aided prospective employers the ability to look at my work and decide if it could be useful to them. The employer I landed with mentioned that he and the Vice-president both reviewed my presentation.
Additionally, it is a good networking tool that can aid in your targeted position search.
HOW TO USE LinkedIn As An Employment Search Tool.
-
This may or may not be of value, but I consider it a must-use tool for professionals seeking new employment. You may want to consider checking it out. If I was asked how to get going, I'd provide the following:
The trick to LinkedIn is to have a robust Profile (take a look at mine).
THEN do a search for Jobs, and find something applicable, and go for it.
THEN join a number of relevant Groups. Most Groups have a Jobs tab, and there are many jobs posted there that are posted nowhere else. Do some digging.
THEN go to TopLinked.com (http://www.toplinked.com/top50.html), and send "Invitations" to link to the top 50 people. This will quickly increase your network of contacts (i.e. the number of people you can see).
THEN call the person who advertised (email doesn't count!). Use the phone.
THEN search for People doing the kind of work you want do do, or search for the Managers of these groups. They can tell you:
1. Whether or not they have an opening.
2. When they will have an opening.
3. Who else in their company or outside of their company that may be Hiring.
If not done already, remember to include an invitation to me (I have 15.4 million links, and am happy to share). Thank you!
Stay well!
